Herculaneum: House of the Wooden Partition plan

Herculaneum: Plan of the House of the Wooden Partition (Athena Review Image Archive)

This relatively large and intact house located at Ins. III, 11 had 3 floors. It is named for a large wooden screen or partition separating the atrium and tablinum. Other preserved wooden items include a bed in a cubiculum, and a clothes press in the shop or tabernum at the rear.

The house was built in the 1st century BC, and redecorated in the early 1st century AD with third style paintings, of which many are preserved. Large murals with architectural, floral, and bird motifs occur in several rooms.
