Herculaneum: Fountain of Venus

Herculaneum: Fountain of Venus (photo: Athena Review)

Public fountains were fed by cisterns, whose water originated from aquaducts. This fountain on the Decumans maximus, built of limestone,  shows a relief sculpture of Venus, with the water issuing from her shell. According to myth, Venus came from the sea.
