The 12 arched chambers in the lower level, called boathouses, were once adjacent to the Bay of Naples. These chambers, when excavated in the 1980s, revealed the skeletons of many people from Herculaneum who fled here during the eruption of Mt.Vesuvius.

Several hundred skeletons were found on the ancient beach and in the 12 chambers, each about 100 sq ft in area. Further excavations in the 1990s confirmed that at least 300 people had taken refuge in the boathouses.
