The Thermopolium Grande, located across from the Palestra, is the largest of several thermopoliae or snack bars known at Herculaneum. It had a U-shaped counter containing 7 dolia or large pots to keep various dishes warm. The top of the doliae lie flush with the counter tops. The name thermopolium in Greek means "many things warmed".The Thermapolium Grande was connected with several other shops via back rooms. Another adjacent shop, two doors down, is called the Thermopolium of Priapus. Several thermopoliae are also known in Pompeii. |
