Paestum: Temple of Poseidon, plan

Paestum: Temple of Poseidon, plan (Athena Review Image Archive)

The large Doric temple known as the Temple of Poseidon, located near the earlier Temple of Hera, was once thought a shrine to Poseidon, the titular deity of Paestum. Later discovery of many votive figurines of Hera, however, show it was in fact a second temple of this goddess, built in ca. 460 BC, nearly a century after the earlier temple to Hera.

Much of the original Doric temple measuring 80 by 200 ft, which was never restored, remains intact, including all columns.
