Paestum: Temple of Athena (photo: Athena Review 2003)

The Temple of Athena, the second oldest at Paestum, is located at its highest elevation. When Paestum was rediscovered in the 18th century, this temple was at first thought to be devoted to Ceres (the Roman name for Demeter).

The Temple combines Doric and Ionic architectural elements. In the Medieval period, the Temple was used as a Christian church, as evidenced by three tombs found there.
