Paestum: Horsehead amphora (Mus.Naz.Paestum; photo Athena Review 2003)

This black-figure amphora with a painting of a horse head, found in Tomb 52 of the Necropolis of Contrada Laghetto in Paestum, is  by an unknown Athenian pottery workshop and painter. It probably dates from about 550 BC.

The so-called horsehead amphora was a popular genre for vase painting for about 50 years, ending in the Late Archaic period.
