Tulúm: Temple of the Frescoes, drawn by Catherwood

Temple of the Frescoes (Stephens and Catherwood 1843).

This accurate view of the Temple of the Frescoes at Tulúm, drawn in 1841 by Frederick Catherwood with the aid of a camera obscura, shows relief sculptures on the roof facade above the columns.

The ground-floor paintings within the antechambers are in the Mixteca-Puebla style, and date from the end of the Late Postclassic period (AD 1450-1520). Included among the subjects are the Mayan god Itzamná and goddess Ix Chel.
