Mayapán: The Round Tower
The Round Tower at Mayapán (Stephens and Czatherwood 1843).
As Landa informs us in his Relación
(1566), at Mayapán the followers of the Toltec ruler Cuculcán "built a
round temple with four entrances, different from all others in the
country." Here the structure is shown as drawn by Catherwood in 1841.
The Round Tower at Mayapán, somewhat resembling the
larger Caracol at Chichén Itzá, may also be associated with round
structures used in central Mexico for the the worship of the wind god
Ehecatl, known from the Late Preclassic and contact period Aztec
culture.
