Mayapán: Effigy Incensario of the Old God

A
number of pottery images of the Old God (a central Mexican deity
associated with the Mayan rain god Chac) were found at Postclassic Maya
centers in Yucatán, including Chichén Itzá and Mayapán. Among the
most notable is this terracotta effigy mask from Mayapán, now in the
Museo Regional de Yucatán in Mérida.
Identifying traits of the
Old God include small tusks or upper canines, heavy upper eyelids, a
protuberance on the forehead, and a helmet with adornos or applique
ornaments.
