This detailed view of the western wall of the Temple Mount, in a 1857 photo by Antonio Beato, represents a very early image of the Jewish worship area known as the Wailing Wall. The built-up area bisecting the wall in the background has today been removed, exposing Warren`s arch and a subterranean passage
The huge rectangular stone blocks of the ancient Herodian Wall are evident in this image, along with the niches in the stonework where written prayers are deposited by the worshippers.
