Jerusalem: Temple Mount, Gate of Cotton Market (1865 photo)

Jerusalem: Temple Mount, Cotton Market Gate (photo: McDonald 1865, PEF)

The Bab el Kattunin, or Gate of the Cotton Market, shown in this 1865 photo by McDonald,  is located on the west side of the Temple Mount. The gate leads out directly to the Suk el Katunnin or traditional Cotton Bazaar, built in the Mamluk period in 1337-8. The gate sits in a trefoil arch, beneath a muqarnas vault with hanging, stalactite-like forms.

The photo was published in the Palestine Exploration Fund (PEF) report of 1865 (Wilson 1865).
