This 1804 painting by Luigi Mayer shows a reconstructed view of the large Pool of Bethesda, a reservoir dating from the Roman and Byzantine eras. The image may be compared with actualities revealed by Beato's photo a half century later.
Mayer`s prints are archived in the New York Public Library (NYPL).
