Jerusalem: Chapel of St. Helena, painting by David Roberts (1842)

Jerusalem: Painting of the Chapel of St Helena (Roberts 1842-9)

The original chapel of St. Helena was built in the fourth century AD by Helena. the mother of Roman emperor Constantine the Great.

This 1842 painting of the Chapel of St Helena by David Roberts shows it in its then current state as an Armenian chapel, after it had been rebuilt in the 12th century by Crusaders.

Robert`s painting, published in 1849 as a lithograph, shows the domed interior with vaulting held by four Byzantine columns from the original 4th century chapel, which Crusaders had used in its reconstruction. At rear is the east-facing altar.
