Jerusalem: Gate of Damascus (1899 photo)

Jerusalem: Gate of Damascus (photo: Bell Archive A024 NcU)

The Gate of Damascus, also called Bab el' Amud, or Gate of the Pillar, is the northern gate of Jerusalem where the main cardo or north-south street meets the road to Damascus. It is one of four gates at the cardinal directions, which are left open.

In this photo taken by Gertrude Bell in December 1899, people are shown passing through the pointed arch gateway, which was rebuilt in 1542 by the Ottoman ruler, Suleiman the Magnificent.

The Bell photo archive is at Newcastle University in England.
