The Dome of the Rock (Qubbet es Sakhra) was built by the Ommiad Caliph, Abd al- Malik. It is an octagonal structure with a golden dome, located near the center of the Temple Mount (Haram ash Sharif).
This 1899 photo by Gertrude Bell is one of a series of photos taken in 1899-1900 when she visited Jerusalem and nearby towns. The Gertrude Bell archive is located at the University of Newcastle.
