Jerusalem: Al Aqsa, Porch, plan and N elevation  (DAP/IAA; Athena Review Image Archive)

This plan shows the plan and north elevation of the Porch of Al Aqsa Mosque, made during 1938-1942 testing by the Palestine Department of Antiquities (DAP)

The plan shows 16 piers. The original porch, from the Crusader period (AD 1099-1187), consisted of three central bays (E1 to W1). Five piers (asterisks) have original capitals and colonnettes, while the remaining central piers have replacements dating from 1217-1350.

The four outside bays (E2, E3, W2, and W3) were added during the Caliphate and Ottoman periods (AD 1187 - 1550).

The Palestine Dept, of Antiquities (DAP) documented al Aqsa Mosque in 1938-1942. Photos, drawings, and R. W. Hamilton`s 1942 report are in the Archives at the Israeli Archaeology Authority (iaa-archives-org.il).
