Jerusalem: Al Aqsa Mosque, plan of Trenches A and B (DAP)

Jerusalem: Al Aqsa, plan of Trenches A & B (DAP 36.857/iaa; Athena Review Image Archive)

This plan shows the plan and sections of the 1938-1942 Trenches A and B by the Palestone Department of Antiquities (DAP) in the nave of the Al Aqsa Mosque. It is based on DAP drawing 36.857.

Trench A revealed the first evidence of a buried marble pavement which R.W. Hamilton and other DAP workers were able to trace through the NE section of the nave. Also found in Trench A and adjacent Trench B were buried plinths or ancient pier footings. These features helped the archaeologists interpret the earliest structures on the site, and to determine the size and layout of the first mosque of Al Aqsa, built ca. AD 710.

The Palestine Dept, of Antiquities (DAP) documented al Aqsa Mosque in 1938-1942. Photos, drawings, and R. W. Hamilton`s 1942 report are in the Archives at the Israeli Archaeology Authority (iaa-archives-org.il).
