Jerusalem: Al Aqsa nave, mosaic buried beneath Pier 3, profile

Jerusalem: Al Aqsa nave, mosaic beneath Pier 3 (Photo: DAP 20-994/IAA)

This photo (DAP 20-994) shows a side or profile view of the mosaic revealed under Pier 3 in the Al Aqsa nave, with the stylobate at right. The section cut below the mosaic pavement shows that the small tesserae were laid on a bed of sandy cement, which was underlain by a layer of pebbles and cobbles.

This area of mosaic, with the same diamond pattern design and bedding, extended at least 10-12 m north to pier 6. The design resembles that in many late Roman and Byzantine floor mosaics.

The Palestine Department of Antiquities (DAP) tested and documented Al Aqsa Mosque in 1938-1942. Photos, drawings, and R. W. Hamilton`s 1942 report are in the Archives at the Israeli Archaeology Authority (iaa-archives-org.il).
