Jerusalem: Al Aqsa nave, mosaic floor beneath Pier 15 (Photo: DAP 20-732/IAA)

This photo (DAP 20-732) shows a portion of the mosaic found under Pier 15. the furthest north of the five piers overlying mosaics This is a fragmentary patch of mosaic tesserae which, from this image, reveals no apparent pattern. The mosaic is overlain by what seems to be a thin layer of plaster or cement.

Five of the piers with underlying mosaic evidence are in a line with the eastern side of the older part of the mosque. Piers 15 sand 30, however, also flank a drain, possibly associated with plain mosaics.

The Palestine Department of Antiquities (DAP) tested and documented Al Aqsa Mosque in 1938-1942. Photos, drawings, and R. W. Hamilton`s 1942 report are in the Archives at the Israeli Archaeology Authority (iaa-archives-org.il).
