Jerusalem: Al Aqsa, carved ornament on beam 8 (DAP photo 20-846-42/ AA)
This image (DAP 20-836-42) shows the elaborate ornamentation carved on the soffit of the wooden tie beam #8, revealed after its removal from the roof of the nave of Al Aqsa Mosque. The image at right is a detailed enlargement of part of the carved beam section shown at left.
The Palestine Dept, of Antiquities (DAP) documented al Aqsa Mosque in 1938-1942. Photos, drawings, and R. W. Hamilton`s 1942 report are in the Archives at the Israeli Archaeology Authority (iaa-archives-org.il).
