Vienne: Mosaic of hospitality

Mosaic of a duck in ancient Vienne (Musee archeologique; photo: Athena Review)

Much of the prosperity of Roman Vienna (Vienne) came from trading activities in the port and warehouse area of Saint-Romain-en-Gal along the Rhône river.

Private houses were often richly decorated with mosaics showing themes of nature, including this late 2nd century AD panel with a duck, symbol of hospitality.  The mosaic is now in the Musée archéologique de St.Romain en Gal-Vienne.
