Nice-Cimiez: Early Christian Baptistry

Christian Baptistry built in Roman Bathhouse at Nice (photo: Athena Review).

In the first decades of the 4th century AD, when Christianity became the official religion of the Roman Empire, an early Christian basilica was built in a portion of the Women's (East) Bath at Nice-Cimiez. One room near the present site of the archaeological museum served as a Baptistry, shown in this view.

Portions of a low vaulted hypocaust from the earlier Baths structure are visible at right, along with remains of columns which supported the roof of the Baptistry.
