Mouth of the Rhône River at Arles

Mouth of the Rhône River on the Mediterranean coast (Athena Review Image Archive)

Arles (Roman Arelate) sits at the southernmost crossing of the Rhône River along several Roman roads (shown as grey lines). These included two north-south routes linking Cologne (Colonia Agrippinensis) with Marseille (Massilia), and Aix-en Provence (Aquae Sextiae); and the Via Domitia, a major east-west road skirting the southern coast of Gaul between northern Italy and Spain.

Mountainous terrain in southern Gaul served to confine major roads within riverine and coastal strips (light gray areas). Those regions shown in light red on the map are above 200 meters elevation.
