Arles: The Lion of Arcoule

The Lion of Arcoule (photo: Athena Review).

One of the best known Gallo-Roman sculptures from Arles is the Lion of Arcoule, which currently sits just inside the entrance to the Musée de l'Arles Antique. The seated lion, made of local limestone in the 1st century BC, was discovered in the 19th century near the Arcoule or fountain of Arles, along with several carved cippi (stone grave-markers).
