Arles: Lead bars stamped with Imperial inscription
Lead bars from Germany, found at Roman Arles (Musée de l'Arles Antique; photo: Athena Review). | ||
The source of the metal is stamped on the right side of the bars as Plumb. Germ. ("lead from Germania"). Marked as well is Imp. Caes. ("Imperial Caesar"), indicating that a percentage of the revenue from the sale of this commodity belonged to the Roman emperor. Also included are abbreviations for Lucius Flavius Verucla, a Roman official who oversaw the production of lead in the province of Germania Inferior (Lower Germany). . |
