Arles: The Cippus of Tyrrania Philematio, a freed slave

The Cippus of Tyrrania Philematio (Musée de l'Arles Antique; photo: Athena Review).

The Musée de l'Arles Antique contains one of the best collections in Europe of Gallo-Roman sculpture and inscriptions, including a number of  Roman marble sarcophagi or tombs.

Many sarcophagi and cippi (gravestones) are carved in high relief with portraits and religious symbolism, at times combining both pagan and early Christian elements. The portrait quality of the subjects also provides insight into the makeup of households in Roman Arelate (Arles).

The 1st century cippus shown here, portraying two women, is dedicated to Tyrrania Philematio, a former slave freed by a person named Sextus.
