Valley of the Kings: location map
. Location map of the Valley of the Kings and the Tomb of Tutankhamun The Valley of the Kings occupies high ground of ridgetops and cliff faces 2-5 miles west of the Nile River, across from Thebes and the major New Kingdom temple complex at Karnak. It was a major location of burial tombs for the royal families in the New Kingdom (17th-20th Dynasties). Most of the tombs were looted in antiquity, and many of the burials were moved elsewhere, including a tomb at nearby Deir el-Bahri. One of the few intact burials found by archaeologists was the tomb of Tutankhamun, discovered in the early 1920s by Howard Carter. |
