Several mummies with painted wooden cases or sarcophagoi in relatively good states of preservation were found in 2008 in tombs at Lahun by excavators from the National Archaeological Agency of Egypt. The top of each sarcophagus is painted with a stylized portrait, representing the deceased as a member of the royal family or nobility.
