Karnak: Granite sculpture of Senusret II
. Granite sculpture of Senusret II (Egyptian National Museum) Seneusret II was was the fourth pharaoh of the 12th Dynasty, ruling from 1897 BC to 1878 BC. His pyramid was constructed at Lahun, where he moved the royal necropolis from Dahshur, and where he established the earliest known workers' village. Senusret II began an extensive irrigation system in the Fayum from the river Bahr Yusef to Lake Moeris, buildng a dike at Lahun with a network of drainage canals. This head from a statue of Senusret II, carved in red granite, was found in Karnak by Flinders Petrie, and is now at the Egyptian National Museum in Cairo. |
