Tomb of Horemheb (KV 57): Valley setting
. Location of the Tomb of Horemheb (KV 57) in the Valley of the Kings (photo: Davis 1909). Horemheb, who was buried in tomb KV 57, was the last monarch of the 18th Dynasty, ruling from 1319-1292 BC. Before becoming pharaoh, Horemheb was the commander in chief of the army under the reigns of Tutankhamun and Ay. His wife was Queen Mutnedjmet, possibly a younger sister of Nefertiti. As they had no children, Horemheb appointed his vizier Paramesse as his successor, who became Ramesses I and founded the 19th Dynasty. Horemheb had constructed two tombs for himself, the first (before he became king) at Saqqara, and the second here, in the Valley of the Kings (KV 57). This tomb was excavated by Theodore Davis and Edward Ayrton, who discovered the entrance to the tomb on Feb. 25, 1908. |
