Giza: Mastaba Tombs
. Mastaba tombs north of the processional road of Cephren (Google Images). Hundreds of mastaba tombs, whose rectangular surface structures are named for the Arabic word for "bench", line the areas north and south of the processional road from the Valley temple to the Mortuary temple of Cephren at Giza. Many of these tombs, the burial sites of nobility, were explored by Karl Richard Lepsius in 1843-4, by Auguste Mariette in the 1850s-60s, and by Petrie and his colleagues from about 1885-1900. |
