Edfu: Temple of Horus (1901 photo)     .

The temple of Horus at Edfu, viewed from the first pylon (anon. photograph 1901).

Located on the west bank of the Nile, Edfu contains a well-preserved Ptolemaic temple complex built  between 237 and 55 BC and devoted to Horus, the falcon god.  The site had previously contained a much older temple complex from the New Kingdom.

A 36 meter-high twin pylon or gateway leads to the temple's inner sanctuary. This view from the top of the pylon includes both the portico of the nearby temple, and a panoramic view of the Nile valley behind it. The Nile River is visible in the far distance at right.
