Dendera: Temple of Hathor (1849 photo)
. Portico of the Temple of Hathor at Dendera (photo: du Camp, 1852, pl 16). This early photo of the Temple of Hathor was taken by Maxime du Camp in 1849, and published in his 1852 volume Egypte, Nubie, Palestine et Syrie. The caption (p.57) reads: "Main Temple of Dendera (Tentyris). General view. Consecrated to Hathor, and subsidiarily to Isis. Date of Cleopatra, Augustus and Tiberius. Walls of unfired bricks" [i.e., on either side of the path to Temple] "constructed by order of Mehimet-Ali to retain the debris of Arab habitations raised successively around the Temple." Note that the same ruined houses around the temple were also described 50 years earlier by the 1798-1801 French Expedition. |
