Lahun: two large compounds for town officials (detail 2)
.
Two adjacent 12th Dynasty compounds from the town at Lahun (after Petrie 1891).
These are two of the largest structures in the 12th Dynasty
town of Lahun (detail 2 on Petrie's plan). They represent house or
palace compounds of officials during the construction of the pyramid of
Senruset II (1897-1878 BC). They may have also served some public or
official functions. A number of the room have columns, and each
contains a large open space (yellow area) which may represent a kind of
atrium. Entrances from the parallel east-west streets flanking the
structures are shown with arrows.
