Til-Chatel: Gallo-Roman funerary relief of wine merchant

Til-Chatel: Gallo-Roman funerary relief (Dijon Mus. Arch; Athena Review Image Archive)

This scene of a wine merchant and his shop , carved on a limestone slab 87 cm high, formed part of a funerary shrine. The detailed depiction of the shop, dating rom the 2nd-3rd century AD, is closely linked with the person or persons memorialized here.

Based on comparison with other family tombs from the period, thist relief represents a wealthy family of wine merchants (see also the tomb reconstruction by Langner 2002).

The carving is now in the Dijon Museum of Archaeology.
