Til-Chatel: Gallo-Roman funerary relief of wine merchant

Til-Chatel: Gallo-Roman funerary relief (Dijon Mus. Arch; Athena Review Image Archive)

This detailed relief carving from Til-Chatel, dating from the 2nd-3rd century AD, is one of the most informative known from the region in terms of Gallo-Roman daily life. It depicts a wine merchant serving a customer in a shop, filling his jar with wine. A boy (possibly a son) sits in the adjacent stall.

Details such as the gradation of wine jars hung over the counter, the form of the transaction itself, and various other items shown here and in the adjacent shop all provide basic information on  Gallo-Roman culture.

The carving is now in the Dijon Museum of Archaeology.
