St.Seine-l'Abbeye: St.Gilles Church, capital with praying man

St. Seine-l'Abbeye, St.Gilles Church, capital (Dijon Mus. Arch; Athena Review Image Archive)

This limestone capital from Saint-Seine-l'Abbeye, dated to the early 12th century AD, is carved with a praying figure with upraised hands. This represents a style found in other Romanesque capitals, such as in the crypt beneath the Abbey Church of St. Philimore in Tournus.

Both here and at Tournus, the figures are bearded men with headbands, perhaps showing priestly status. A more sophisticated sculpture showing this is the head of Saint Benin from Dijon.

The carving is now in the Dijon Museum of Archaeology.
