The
female river deity Sequana (Seine) was worshipped at a temple shrine at
the source of the river, at a spring believed to have healing
power. Pilgrims to the shrine of Sequana, seeking cures, placed
votive images of their ailments at the shrine.
One of the most common votive images depicts a pair of eyes, as shown in this mask-like plaque, now in the Dijon Museum of Archaeology.
