Dijon: Abbey St. Benin refectory, carved tympaneum

Dijon: Abbey refectory, tympaneum (Dijon Mus. Arch; Athena Review Image Archive)

This carved tympaneum, dated at ca. 1150-1175 AD, was over the portal of the dining hall or refectory of the Abbey of St. Benin. The scene includes several monks sitting or sleeping at a dining table, with a row of larger, sainted figures seated along the  back, behind them.

The tympaneum is considered a work of the same unidentified master who also carved the statue of St. Benin in the abbey church, the head of which is now preserved in the Dijon Musem of Archaeology.
