St. Benin's Romanesque crypt, dating from AD 1000-1018, was built as the Abbey church of St. Benin under the direction of Abbot William of Volpiano. He introduced certain Lombard features such as alternating piers, arched corbel courses, and superimposed arcades.
This view shows steps leading up to the altar, which was originally.that of the abbey church.
