Caen: Church of Saint-Etienne-le-Vieux, statue of Constantine

Caen: Statue of Constantine at St-Etienne-le-Vieux (photo Athena Review 2013)

St-Etienne-le-Vieux was first built in the 10th century AD as a Romanesque monastic chapel. The original church was destroyed by English sieges of 1346 and 1417, then rebuilt in Gothic style in the 15th century. It is now disused and preserved as a historic ruin.

This equestrian statue of the Roman emperor Constantine the Great, located on the exterior wall of the church, dates from the 13th century. Constantine made Christianity the official religion of the Roman Empire in AD 313.
