St-Etienne-le-Vieux was first built in the 10th century AD as a Romanesque monastic chapel. The original church was destroyed by English sieges of 1346 and 1417, then rebuilt in Gothic style in the 15th century. It is now disused and preserved as a historic ruin.At
present, the nave and south aisle of St.-Etienne-le-Vieux are
completely gone, but the north aisle, transept and crossing tower still
stand. This view shows Flambouyant or Late Gothic stonework from the 15th century around the doors. |
