Caen: Church of Saint-Etienne-le-Vieux, north portal

Caen: North portal of St-Etienne-le-Vieux (photo Athena Review 2013)

St-Etienne-le-Vieux was first built in the 10th century AD as a Romanesque monastic chapel. The original church was destroyed by English sieges of 1346 and 1417, then rebuilt in Gothic style in the 15th century. It is now disused and preserved as a historic ruin.

This view through the north portal shows elaborate cross-ribbed vaulting on the porch ceiling, and pointed arches over the doorway, both typical of the Gothic style.
