Sees & Touffreville: Gallo-Roman bronze fibulae (1st-4th c.AD)

Sees & Touffreville: Bronze fibulae (Caen Mus.Normandie; photo Athena Review 2013)

These two brooches or fibulae with enamel decoration show intricate and imaginative manufacture,  both in the stamped designs at either end,  resembling the heads of birds, and the colored enamel inlays on top.

Jewelry such as this is typically found in the graves of women and children.

Sees, 60 km from Caen on the River Orne, was capital of the Sagii people of Gaul. Touffreville is located just east of the River Seine, 70 miles east of Caen.
