Lisieux: earthenware flagon (Caen Mus.Normandie; photo Athena Review 2013)

This earthenware flagon or jug, covered with a thin lead glaze, was found in a grave at Lisieux dating from the 1st century AD. The vessel was manufactured in a pottery workshop in Central Gaul, and imported to the Normandy region.

Vessels for serving food and drink were often placed in Gallo-Roman graves.

Lisieux, located about 25 miles (40 km) east of Caen, was occupied from the 1st century AD onward by Roman settlements, and has necropoli dating from several periods.
