Frenouville: Two Merovingian cloisonne fibulae (6th c. AD)

Frenouville: Merovingian fibulae (Caen Mus.Normandie; photo Athena Review 2013)

This pair of  brooches or fibulae, made of silver with cloisonne inlay of glass beads, were found in a 6th century burial in the Frenouville necropolis, located 8 km southeast of Caen.

In the cloisonne method, tiny soldered compartments (cloisons) of silver were made to hold the beads used in the fibulae, now displayed in the Caen Musee de Normandie.
