Milestone found near the Antonine Wall (RIB 2312)


Roman milestone from the Antonine Wall  (RIB 2312).


This Roman milestone dates from the reign of the emperor Antoninus Pius (AD 138-161). It was was discovered along the Military Way of the Antonine Wall in ca. 1726 by the Rev. William Stukely, who made numerous findings related to a study of ancient Roman roads in Britain. Preserved in this drawing by Stukely, the milestone was unfortunately lost in 1732.

The fragmentary inscription (with typical abbreviations) reads "For the Emperor Caesar Titus Aelius Hadrianus Antoninus Pius, father of his country, the detachments [vexillations]...."
