Baalbek: Temple of Venus, detail (photo: Bell Archive 1890/ A.350 NcU)

This 1900 photo by Gertude Bell shows architectural detail of the Temple of Venus, including two of its Corinthian capitals, a wreath relief over the doorway, and  elaborately decorated cornices.

The temple, with its striking curved or scalloped roofline, was begun by the Roman emperor Septimius Severus, and completed ca.AD 220 during the reign of Elegabalus.

The Gertrude Bell Archive is at Newcastle University in England..
