Autun: Gallo-Roman pottery oil lamp (4th-6th c. AD)

Autun: pottery oil lamp (Musee Rolin; photo Athena Review 2012)

This terracotta lamp from Autun (inv.1832) is of a standard form for lamps in the late Roman Empire. The same forms persisted into the Merovingian period, making it difficult to date them precisely.

These mould-made lamps frequently had relief designs. In the Roman period these ranged from gladiators to Roman dieties. After Christianity was established, Chi Rho and fish designs became commonly used on lamps.
